S1.01 Create your first project

In this video, we are using Unreal Engine version 5.0, but we recommend that you choose the latest one. Currently, the course instructions are updated for the 5.4 version of the engine.

If your project is already in the 5.0 version of the engine, don't worry. In section 11, we will upgrade it to the latest version of Unreal Engine.

Lesson Summary

This lesson provides instructions on how to install and launch Unreal Engine 5 through the Epic Games launcher, and then create and open the Unreal Project that we will use for this game.

Install and launch Unreal Engine 5

  • Search for Unreal Engine in your browser and download the Epic Games Launcher if you don't already have it installed.
  • Make sure your system meets the minimum requirements for Unreal Engine 5.
  • Install the Epic Games launcher
  • Once the launcher is installed, open it and in the Unreal Engine Library tab, click on the plus button and choose the desired version of Unreal Engine to install. Try to choose a location that is not inside an external hard drive, as this can lead to performance issues.
  • Launch Unreal Engine 5 through the Epic Games launcher.

Create and open the game project

  • In the project browser, create a new project by clicking on Games.
  • Choose a Blank.
  • Select Blueprint project.
  • Set the target platform to Desktop and adjust the quality settings as desired, in our case Maximum.
  • Provide a suitable project name, keep it under 20 characters to avoid asset referencing issues. We are using the name "My1stDungeonCrawler" but you can choose a differnt name
  • Click,on Create
  • Once the project is created, you can access the viewport and begin working on your project. The default level will be loaded in the viewport.
